Waldlied became the lasted star to emerge from New Approach’s brilliant three-year-old crop when running right away with the G2 Prix de Malleret on Sunday, 1 July. Settled behind the leaders early, her jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot was unhappy with the slow early pace and taking up the running after half-a-mile, she never saw another rival. She passed the line the easy two-and-a-half length winner from Fuse (Teofilo) with a further six lengths back to the third.
Owned and bred by Newsells Park Stud and Gestut Ammerland, she is a three-parts sister to Waldgeist, who had won his second G1 earlier on the card in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Her dam, the G3-winning Monsun mare Wadlerche, is a half-sister to St Leger hero Masked Marvel.
New Approach’s current Classic crop already includes Derby hero Masar, who is due to run on Saturday in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown, Hey Gaman, who was only just denied in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains, and Royal Ascot handicap winner Ostilio.
