Alegron last to first in G2 Brisbane Cup

Another feature staying race victory to progeny of Teofilo

Teofilo again displayed his amazing ability to sire top-class stayers when Alegron won the G2 Brisbane Cup over 3,200m on Saturday, 15 June at Eagle Farm in Brisbane.

Despite racing at the tail of the field and giving away a huge start at the 600m pole, Alegron charged down the outside to beat Mostly Cloudy and Captain Envious by a widening 1.3 lengths.

Patiently ridden by Dylan Gibbons for Sydney-based New Zealand trainer Bjorn Baker, Alegron took his record to four wins and five placings from 28 starts for prize money totalling $1,360,265.

Placed in the G1 VRC Derby and G1 Australian Derby as a three-year-old, Alegron now has three Stakes victories.

The now five-year-old gelding, out of Australian mare Alegria – who also has an unraced two-year-old filly, a yearling colt by Ghaiyyath and was covered by the same stallion last September.

Unbeaten in England and Ireland in five starts as a two-year-old, Teofilo has now sired 770 winners of 2,255 races worldwide, including 115 Stakes winners of 238 Black-Type races.

His progeny in events longer than 2,400m have won 520 races, including 24 individual Stakes winners of 42 Stakes races.

Just last month, Alessio (out of Alandia) won the G2 Oleander Rennen over 3,200m at Hoppegarten in Germany and Melbourne Cup champs Cross Counter, Twilight Payment and Without A Fight are among Teofilo’s 24 G1 winners.
