Dubawi, Europe’s leading first-season sire by number of winners, further extended his lead at the head of the table on 13 October when his daughter Deirdre broke her maiden in fine style at Newcastle.
Taking the lead from the off, the John Gosden-trained filly picked up the pace two furlongs from home and took the one-mile contest by three and a quarter lengths.
Owned and bred by Normandie Stud, Deirdre is out of the Listed winner and G1 Coronation Stakes third Dolores (Danehill). She is also dam of two Black type winners in Samuel and Duncan.
Dubawi is also sire of G2 winners Poet’s Voice and Sand Vixen, plus fellow Group performers Dubawi Heights, Astrophysical Jet and Dubawi Phantom.
Meanwhile on Wednesday, with Oaks contender written all over her, Bart Cummings' lightly-raced Shamardal filly Faint Perfume produced a sustained run from back in the field to take third place in today's G1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield.
Bred by Wynyarra Stud, Faint Perfume is out of the Zabeel mare Zona, herself a daughter of the G1 AJC Oaks winner Danendri (Danehill). A Championthree-year-old, Danendri was a dual G1 winner who also finished second in the VRC Oaks; and the AJC Derby against the colts.
From Shamardal's first southern hemisphere crop, Faint Perfume was one of her sires 12 individual two-year-old winners last season. She becomes the fifth new Stakes horse for her sire in the space in of three weeks and his seventh overall in the southern hemisphere. Currently the leading first-season sire in Europe, Shamardal looks to have some nice progressive three-year-old currently racing in Australia.
A Champion at both two and three, Shamardal is out of the Machiavellian mare Helsinki, herself a full sister to fellow Darley stallion Street Cry.
Street Cry recorded G1 winners on opposite sides of the world last weekend in the now G1 Cox Plate favourite Whobegotyou and the unbeaten Zenyatta, who recorded her seventh victory at the highest level when taking the Lady's Secret Handicap for the second year running. It is likely that he will have two runners in this Saturday's G1 Caulfield Cup with Predatory Pricer and Shocking drawn side by side in barrier 16 and 17 respectively.
