The feature race at Goodwood on 23 September was the Listed Foundation Stakes and the ten-furlong contest was won in some style by Authorized’s tough performer Battalion.
Tracking the early leader in a somewhat tactical contest, William Haggas’s charge moved to the near side rail approaching the two-furlong marker and soon took the lead. Battalion kept to his task superbly and made light work of the soft ground to win by three quarters of a length from Wannabe Yours (Dubawi).
This was his fifth career victory and his second at Stakes level following his win in last year’s Churchill Stakes. He has also been Group placed on three occasions, including in the G3 Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor three weeks ago.
Bred by Kildaragh Stud, Battalion is out of the Halling mare Zigarra, herself a half-sister to G2 winner Silent Name and from the immediate family of Gold Away.
Authorized has now sired ten individual Stakes winners this year, headed by G1 winner Hartnell and G2-winning duo Complacent and Maygrove.
