Godolphin’s Shakespearean, from the first crop of Shamardal, led from pillar to post to win the seven-furlong Hungerford Stakes at Newbury on 14 August, recording his third Black type victory in the process.
Winner of the G3 Solario Stakes and the Goffs Million as a juvenile, the Mark Johnston-trained colt took the Listed Surrey Stakes at Epsom on his seasonal debut.
Bred by Mrs H Owen and now running in the colours of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed al Maktoum, Shakespearean is out of the Priolo mare Paimpolaise, a half-sister to Pont-Aven – dam of four Black type winners including Sainte Marine and Josr Algarhoud.
Shamardal has now sired no fewer than 12 individual Black type winners this year, including dual Classic winner Lope de Vega, Australian G1 winner Faint Perfume and the G2-winning German Derby runner up Zazou.
Also on Saturday, first-season sire Shirocco recorded his first winner when his daughter Surfista won first time out over seven furlongs at Dax in France.
Bred by Marquesa De Moratalla, Surfista is out of the Kendor mare Subasta, already dam of a G3 winner in Rageman.
