A powerful performance by the two-year-old colt Avonallo in Saturday’s Listed Welcome Stakes at Riccarton made him the fifth Stakes winner by his sire Belardo.
Avonallo also becomes Belardo’s first southern hemisphere winner thanks to his two-length defeat of Follow Your Dreams in the 1,000m race.
The colt, a member of Belardo’s first southern-hemisphere crop, was having his third start after finishing runner-up to Follow Your Dreams in his previous two.
A NZ$30,000 purchase at this year’s NZB National Yearling Sale where he was offered by Little Avondale Stud, who have retained part ownership, Avonallo is the fourth foal and second winner from the unraced O’Reilly mare Real Angel.
Belardo has shuttled to Hainui Farm in New Zealand under an arrangement with Darley and will stand the coming northern-hemisphere season at Kildangan Stud in Ireland at a fee of €10,000, special live foal.
