The aptly named Good Effort, a son of Shamardal, made all under jockey Ben Curtis to land the Listed Cleves Stakes at Lingfield on Saturday, 1 February. Sent off favourite, the five-year-old made all, quickening clear a furlong out to lead home a Darley Stallions 1-2 with Soldier’s Minute (Raven’s Pass) taking second.
Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock, Good Effort is the best performer from the Distorted Humour mare Magical Crown. She is a half-sister to the Stakes-winning Albert Park and also the Group-placed pair Magny Cours and Ecliptic. They are out of the G1-winning Indy Five Hundred, herself an own sister to the dam of multiple G1 winner and Champion Royal Delta.
In an astonishing 2019 season, Shamardal sired 5 individual G1 winners including the outstanding Blue Point, who captured a pair of G1’s at Royal Ascot, and the Champion Two-Year-Old colt Pinatubo who took both the G1 National Stakes and G1 Dewhurst.
