The versatility of the multiple G1 winner Humidor and his sire Teofilo again went on winning display in the G1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, 1 September.
Humidor was already in the top bracket of Teofilo’s offspring before he took on a field of classy sprinters over the 1400m of the Memsie and he confirmed that status with another outstanding performance.
Unable to stay in touch with the speed horses in the early stages, Humidor took a position beyond midfield and on the fence and seemed destined to remain there.
But when a gap appeared at the 200m, jockey Damian Lane urged him through it and he responded magnificently to snatch victory by a short head from the Godolphin colt Kementari (Lonhro).
Already one of Teofilo’s 80 stakes winners, Humidor has now won three G1s over distances ranging from 1,400m to 2,000m.
He also came closer than any horse has in three years to beating the world champion mare Winx, running her to a neck in last spring’s G1 Cox Plate.
Bred in New Zealand by Jomara Bloostock, Humidor is out of the winning Zabeel mare Zalika and is from a family that includes Champion European sprinter Habibti, whose nine victories included the G1 treble of the King's Stand Stakes, the Prix de l’Abbaye and the July Cup.
