Gingernuts, a classy son of Iffraaj, claimed his first career G1 victory in the New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie on Saturday 4 March.
After jumping neatly, the chestnut gelding slotted in a few lengths off the speed, and loomed as the main danger as the field turned for home. Despite being hampered around the 200m mark, Gingernuts regained composure to race away and claim a dominant victory from Rising Red, with his paternal half-brother Jon Snow back in third.
Bred by Goodwood Stud, Gingernuts came into the race on the back of a victory in the G2 Avondale Guineas. He is out of the Generous mare Double Elle, who has five winners from as many runners to her name. Gingernuts becomes his family’s fourth G1 winner, joining relations Guiseppina, The Pooka and Rubiscent.
Iffraaj has now sired seven G1 winners including Ribchester, Rizeena, Chriselliam and Wootton Bassett. He is standing at Dalham Hall Stud at a fee of £27,500 October 1st SLF.
