Fireglow shines at Sandown

The Star Stakes at Sandown have proved a very happy hunting ground for progeny of the Darley stallions and on 23 July, Fireglow (Teofilo) became the fourth consecutive Darley-sired winner of the race when taking the seven-furlong contest in eye-catching fashion.

Last seen finishing a creditable fourth in the G3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot (having completely missed the break), Fireglow once again did not enjoy the easiest of starts, finding herself caught wide during the early stages. However, under a patient ride from William Buick, the Mark Johnston-trained juvenile picked up impressive once entering the home straight and once in front soon moved clear to win by two and a quarter lengths.

She becomes the second winner of this race in three years for Teofilo, whose daughter Roz went on to finish second in the G1 Fillies’ Mile following her victory at Sandown in 2012.

Fireglow is out of the Group-placed King's Best mare Fading Light, herself a half-sister to the granddam of Camelot.

Teofilo is enjoying a tremendous year, siring no fewer than 26 individual Black type performers including G1 winners Pleascach and Kermadec. He has a further five G1-placed horses to his name, plus another Stakes-winning juvenile in Round Two.
