Unbeaten Leofilo lands German Derby Trial

Baden-Baden proved a successful hunting ground for both the Darley stallions and owner breeders Gestut Ittlingen on 11 May, when shortly after Daksha (Authorized) took the Oaks trial, Teofilo’s three-year-old son Leofilo remained unbeaten when taking the Derby trial.

Sent straight into the lead, the Waldemar Hickst-trained colt travelled smoothly throughout the ten-furlong contest and despite being hard pressed close to home by Schulz and favourite Protectionist, kept to his task superbly and won by a head.

Leofilo first caught the eye when breaking his maiden in impressive style at Frankfurt last month, running out the two-and-a-half-length winner of a ten-furlong maiden.

He is out of the winning Groom Dancer mare Late Night, herself a half-sister to two Group winners in Love Academy and Lauro. Should Leofilo go on to win the German Derby, he would be following in the footsteps of two other members of his family, Lando and Laroche.

Teofilo is now sire of 11 Black type performers this year, including G2 winner Amira’s Prince and Havana Gold, who lines up in tomorrow’s G1 French 2,000 Guineas. He has another Classic contender in Vaunoise, due to run in the 1,000 Guineas at Longchamp, also on Sunday.

Teofilo, also sire of G1 winners Parish Hall and Loch Garman, stands at Kildangan Stud at a fee of €35,000 October 1st SLF.
