Shamardal is enjoying an outstanding run of success this year and on Sunday, 12 May, he added a sixth European Group winner to his 2019 record when his son Hazapour ran out the easy winner of the G3 Amethyst Stakes.
The Dermot Weld-trained four-year-old was settled behind stablemate Zuenoon during the early stages of the one-mile contest and once he took the lead inside the final two furlongs, soon put the race to bed and eventually won by two and a half lengths.
Hazapour won on his second start at two, before finishing third in the G3 Eyrfield Stakes. He reappeared at three with victory in the G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial. He was fifth to Masar (New Approach) in last year’s Epsom Derby.
Owned and bred by His Highness The Aga Khan, Hazapour is one of four winners out of the Stakes-winning Daylami mare Hazarafa. She is a half-sister to G1 Epsom Derby winner Harzand.
Shamardal’s tally of six European Group winners cannot be better by any other sire. He is also sire of 2019 G1 Al Quoz Sprint winner Blue Point, plus 2,000 Guineas third Skardu.
Only yesterday, he added a new Group winner to his record when Tarnawa landed the G3 Blue Wind Stakes at Naas, while also on Sunday, his talented son Shaman took second in the G1 French 2,000 Guineas.
