Rio de la Plata recorded a new winner on 23 June when his son Alcazar justified odds-on favouritism to take the seven-furlong novice at Newcastle.
Settled towards the rear under jockey Jamie Spencer during the early stages, Alcazar was still on the bridle as they passed the two-furlong marker, but once asked to quicken soon took the lead and although hard pressed close to home by eventual second Major Cornwallis, kept to his task well to win by a neck.
Alcazar was bred by Mr I and Mrs M Shenkin and is now the third winner out of the Sendawar mare Zarkiyna, a half-sister to G3 Prix de Sandringham winner Zarkiya.
Rio de la Plata was a G1-winning juvenile who went on to win twice more at the highest level. He is also sire of dual winner Aiming For Rio, who won her second race by no fewer than five lengths last month.
