First-season sire Shamardal has been enjoying a successful spell in both hemispheres recently and the young Darley stallion continued his good run on 28 July when his son Lowdown landed the 1200m maiden at Glorious Goodwood.
Breaking smartly from the gate, the juvenile colt was soon in front and was never seriously challenged, running on well to win by a length-and-a-quarter.
Lowdown’s trainer Mark Johnston, who trained Shamardal himself during his juvenile year, is clearly impressed by his former charge’s offspring, saying after the race, "Lowdown is from the first crop of Shamardal and we have about a dozen of them and they are lovely horses. Several will win races and three or four of them are really nice including Shakespearan, who is a cracking horse and will probably head to the Royal Lodge.”
Shamardal, who is currently joint-leading first-season sire in Australia, has now sired seven individual winners in Europe and was recently represented by his first Black type winner when Arctic took the Grangecon Stud Stakes at the Curragh in Ireland.
His fee for 2009 is $27,500 including GST.
