Poet’s Voice opened his 2018 Black Type account in fine style on Friday, 5 January when his four-year-old daughter Leaves of Grass flew home to land the Listed Jamaica Handicap at Kenilworth, South Africa.
Settled in mid division early on in the ten-furlong contest, Leaves of Grass was switched to the outside once entering the home straight and picked up brilliantly inside the final furlong to get up as the line approached and win by a head. This was the third career victory for Leaves of Grass, who finished second in the Winter Oaks at the same course back in June.
Leaves of Grass was bred in Australia by Mr A Olive and is out of the multiple winner Promotional, who is from the family of Lonhro’s Stakes-winning daughter Quidnunc.
Poet’s Voice enjoyed an outstanding European season in 2017, siring 29 juvenile winners – a figure that can only be bettered by his own sire Dubawi. Poet’s Voice is also sire of last year’s British and Irish Champions Stakes second Poet’s Word.
Poet’s Voice stands at Dalham Hall Stud at a fee of £6,000, October 1, Special Live Foal.
