Poet’s Word, a son of the late Poet’s Voice who sadly died earlier this year, won his second successive G1 when running out the thrilling victor of the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. Held up off the strong early pace, he had a lot of ground to make up on his stablemate Crystal Ocean in the straight, and after making relentless headway, managed to get on top to win by a neck with a mammoth nine lengths back to the third Coronet (Dubawi).
Now the winner of seven of his 16 career starts, he came into the race on the back of a victory at the Royal Meeting in the G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, when defeating Cracksman by over two lengths.
Bred by Woodcote Stud, Poet’s Word is a half-brother to multiple G3-winner Malabar (Raven’s Pass) and dual winner Whirley Dancer, herself the dam of last season’s G1 juvenile Beckford. He is out of the Stakes-performing mare Whirly Bird who hails from the extended family of Inchmurrin and Classic winner Harbour Law.
Poet’s Voice was Dubawi’s first ever Group-winning colt, who recently cemented his position as Britain’s best-ever stallion when siring his 100th individual Group winner Crown Walk (who steps up to G1 level in France tomorrow in the Prix Rothschild). He is also turning into an excellent sire of sires with his 2,000 Guineas winning son Makfi having already sired four G1 winners, three of which have won Classics including French 2,000 Guineas winner Make Believe. Alongside their sire at Dalham Hall is 2,000 Guineas hero Night Of Thunder and four-time G1 winner Postponed while at Haras du Logis in France is the 126-rated Hunter’s Light.
