Shamardal has a live Derby contender this season through his son Hazapour, winner of the G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes on Sunday, 13 May. Run over ten furlongs at Leopardstown, he made his move in the straight, running on really well to record a three-quarter-of-a-length victory over Delano Roosevelt and The Pentagon.
Making his seasonal debut, he broke his maiden as a juvenile at Galway in September before running third in the G3 Eyrefield Stakes over today’s course.
Owned and bred by The Aga Khan, Hazapour is a son of the Stakes-winning mare Hazarafa (Daylami), a half-sister to 2016 Derby hero Harzand.
Shamardal has now sired 60 individual Group winners including 19 that have scored at the highest level including last month’s Queen Elizabeth II Cup hero Pakistan Star.
