Master of The Seas added yet another Grade 1 tally to his burgeoning resume when he took command in the stretch and drew off to post a two-and-a-quarter length victory in the $600,000 G1 Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland on Friday, 12 April.
The six-year-old Dubawi gelding led home a Godolphin/Darley-sired exacta, as Naval Power (Teofilo) closed well late to take second. The Maker’s Mark victory was the third G1 win for Master of The Seas, who captured the G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile in his previous start. In addition, the Godolphin color bearer also won the G1 Ricoh Woodbine Mile, and just missed by a nose in the G1 Coolmore Turf Mile last fall, also at Keeneland.
At the start it was Emmanuel that went to the lead to set the pace, with Kubrick (Dubawi) following in second and Master of The Seas content to stalk the pace from third as he saved ground along the inside rail. Master of The Seas made his move at the top of the stretch, quickly accelerating past both Kubrick and Emmanuel to take the lead. From there it was all clear sailing, with Master of The Seas eventually crossing the wire an easy winner.
A Godolphin homebred, Master of The Seas is one of ten winners out of Firth of Lorne including Stakes winners Latharnach (Iffraaj) and Falls Of Lora (Street Cry), who is herself the dam of two G1 winners.
Dubawi, the sire of an incredible 57 individual G1 winners, has gotten off to a great start in 2024 with Master of The Seas being joined by Rebel’s Romance, winner of the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic on 30 March. Additional Group/Graded winners so far this year include Warren Point, Siskany, Francesco Clemente and Military Law.
