It wasn’t only the sun scorching on the Sussex Downs on Wednesday, 31 July as Dubawi’s brilliant 2,000 Guineas winner Notable Speech once again demonstrated his blistering turn of foot to take the G1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. In doing so, he became the first Guineas winner since Frankel to complete the double in the same year.
Settled in third under William Buick early on, Notable Speech was always travelling well and once reaching the cutaway, his pace simply exploded to take him to the front and cross the line a length and a half ahead of the fast-finishing Maljoom.
A homebred for Godolphin, Notable Speech is out of the Group-placed Invincible Spirit mare Swift Rose, herself a half-sister to G1 winner Wild Beauty and fellow Dubawi Group winner Desert Wisdom.
Notable Speech provided Dubawi with a 50th G1 win for Godolphin.
Earlier on the Goodwood card, Raqiya (Blue Point) had to wait for the outcome of a steward’s enquiry before being awarded the G3 Oak Tree Stakes to become her sire’s latest Group winner. The Shadwell homebred is also winner of this year’s Listed Cathedral Stakes.
Wednesday also saw success for first-season sires Earthlight and Pinatubo, with the former siring a new Black Type performer in G3 Molecomb third Mr Lightside and a new winner when Tees Aggregate posted a front-running victory over five furlongs at Leicester.
Pinatubo added a new winner to his record in very impressive fashion when Diablo Rojo won by over three lengths on debut at Redcar. A 325,000-guinea yearling bred by J Hanly, A Stroud and Skymarc Racing, Diablo Rojo looks like a very exciting prospect for his owners Amo Racing.
