Daughter of Cape Cross wins UAE Derby

Khawlah, a three-year-old daughter of Cape Cross, came out the fighting winner of the G2 UAE Derby over nine-and-a-half furlongs at Meydan.

Winner of the G3 UAE Oaks last time out, Khawlah sealed the UAE Classic double with a late run to become the first filly ever to win the UAE Derby. The Saeed bin Suroor trained daughter of Cape Cross got up on the line under Mickael Barzalona, to win by a nose.

Bred by Darley, Khawlah is out of the winning Selkirk mare Villarrica, a granddaughter of the great Urban Sea who is the dam of Cape Cross’s outstanding son Sea The Stars.

Cape Cross, who stands at Kildangan Stud in Ireland for a fee of €35,000, sired no fewer than 14 individual Black type winners in 2010, including G1-winning duo Behkabad and Able One.

Later in the day on the same card, Dubawi's Monterosso was a closing third in the G1 Dubai World Cup, the world’s richest horserace. Monterosso, winner of the G2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot as a three-year-old, came into the race on the back of an excellent win in the G2 Dubai City of Gold Stakes on his only other start this season.

Dubawi stands this season for £55,000, and has now sired eight individual G1 horses, including last year’s 2,000 Guineas hero Makfi.
