Recording his 13th individual Stakes winner of the 2010/11 racing season with the victory of four-year-old mare Jerezana, Lonhro not only leads the General Sires’ table by over $1.2 million in earnings, but no other stallion has recorded more individual Stakes winners so far this season.
Jumping away well from barrier six, the Peter Snowden-trained mare settled on the rails towards the rear of the field. With an even tempo being set up front by the comeback galloper Here De Angels, jockey Andrew Gibbons took the mare out wide to commence her run as the field fanned for home. Under hands and heels riding, the mare pushed through a gap and rounded up the leaders in a matter of strides, pulling away from the field to take the Listed Ramornie Handicap at Grafton by over a length on July 13.
A winner of five from 17, Jerezana was bred by Woodlands Stud and is out of the G1-performing Barathea mare Saddler’s Silk, a full-sister to the Listed-winning, G1-placed Barawin. Sadler’s Silk has a weanling by Champion sprinter Exceed And Excel on the ground and is currently is currently carrying a full relation to Jerezana.
To put into perspective the achievement of Lonhro as the soon to be crowned Champion sire, the 11-time G1 winner joins Danehill and Sir Tristram as stallions who were crowned Champion sire just seven years after retiring to stud.
The sire of 26 individual Stakes winners to date, Lonhro is the sire of G1 winners Beaded, Denman and Benfica, G2 winners Parables, O’Lonhro and Obsequious as well as G3 winners Trim, Deer Valley and Demerit. Standing the forthcoming breeding season at Darley Kelvinside at a fee of $77,000 (inc GST), the Champion sire elect is sure to once again prove extremely popular.
