Night Of Thunder sired a new Group winner on Saturday, 4 March, when his six-year-old son, Global Storm, who was making his seasonal reappearance, made virtually all the running to strike in the G2 Dubai City of Gold at Meydan, Dubai for Godolphin.
The chestnut gelding, who was third in this race last year, was settled to track the leaders under William Buick, he soon picked up the lead 1700m out and ran on well to score by an easy two-and-a-half lengths over stablemate Kemari (Dubawi) back in second. This was a sixth win in the race for his trainer Charlie Appleby.
Bred by Grenane House Stud, Global Storm is a first foal out of the Street Cry winning mare, Travel, she is a half-sister to US G2 winner Eight Belles who also runner-up in the G1 Kentucky Derby.
Night Of Thunder, who is now the sire of 33 individual Stakes winners, enjoyed a successful season last year, the highlight being sprinting filly Highfield Princess who was rated by Timeform as the best sprinter in Europe with a rating of 126 following a tremendous G1 treble. He is also the sire of promising G2-winning colt, Isaac Shelby.
