Mischief Magic showed an impressive turn of foot as he charged from last to first in the final furlong to win the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland on Friday, 4 November.
The two-year-old colt by Exceed And Excel became the seventh Breeders’ Cup winner from 12 starters so far for trainer Charlie Appleby, who sent out three Breeders’ Cup winners in 2021.
Ridden by Champion jockey William Buick, Mischief Magic raced at the rear of the field early as Tyler’s Tribe and Speed Boat Beach led the runners through swift opening fractions. Asked for a bit more entering the far turn, Mischief Magic began closing along the inside rail, but was forced to switch to the outside in search of running room as the field entered the home straight. Mischief Magic split horses in deep stretch and shot to the lead, overhauling Dramatised to win by a length.
Mischief Magic set a new Stakes record of 1:02.41 for 5.5 furlongs.
A Godolphin homebred, Mischief Magic was bred in Ireland and is a full brother to Royal Ascot juvenile Stakes winner Sound And Silence. His dam Veil Of Silence (Elusive Quality) hails from the extended family of Classic winner Barathea.
Exceed And Excel, a dual G1 winner during a racetrack career that yielded six wins in Stakes company, has sired 557 two-year-old winners worldwide of 769 races. He recently became the first Australian stallion to reach 200 individual Stakes winners.
