German-raider Sun Of Gold showed great tenacity to win his first Stakes race on Saturday, 14 August in the Listed Prix Michel Houyvet. The three-year-old son of Golden Horn was under pressure a long way from home but battled gamely in the 2800m contest to get on top near the finish.
Lightly raced and making only his sixth start, Sun Of Gold won his first two career starts, before stepping up into Stakes company in his native Germany with a brace of fourth’s including a G2 at Cologne.
Owned and bred by Gestüt Höny-Hof, Sun Of Gold hails from the excellent German family that includes Samum and Schiaparelli. His dam is the winning King’s Best-mare Salve Aurora, who is herself the daughter of Champion Salve Regina.
Sun Of Gold is the third new Stakes performer for Golden Horn within the past seven days after Alerta Roja in Germany last Sunday and Rodrigo Diaz, who was an excellent second in the G3 Geoffrey Free Stakes earlier in the day.
