Two juvenile G1 races were run within five minutes on Saturday, 24 October with Darley stallions siring the first two home in both.
First to start was the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud with Teofilo’s son Gear Up proving to be a very gallant winner. Sent to the front straight from the stalls, the Mark Johnston-trained colt defied every challenger, eventually defeating Golden Horn’s second-crop son Botanik by a neck.
Gear Up has now won three of his four starts including a victory at York’s Ebor meeting in the G3 Acomb Stakes.
Bred by Jim Bolger and a €52,000 yearling purchase, Gear Up is a full-brother to Group winner Guaranteed and out of the Toccet-mare Gearanai, a granddaughter of four-time US G1 heroine Dispute.
It was great few minutes for Jim Bolger, as his bred/owned/trained Mac Swiney gained his second Group victory of the year in the G1 Futurity Trophy at Doncaster. The son of New Approach has stamina in abundance and he needed every yard of the mile trip to beat One Ruler (Dubawi) by three-quarters-of-a-length, with the pair clear.
Mac Swiney is from the extended family of Teofilo’s G1 Dewhurst winner Parish Hall and has intriguing breeding being out of Halla Na Saoire (also by Teofilo), making him 2X3 to Galileo.
Both Teofilo and New Approach have been enjoying excellent seasons, siring nine and eight individual Group winners apiece, which is unbeatable by any other son of Galileo. Teofilo has sired four G1 winners on the year, which is only beaten by his own sire amongst European stallions.
