Teofilo’s tremendous season continued on the opening day of York’s Ebor meeting on Wednesday, 19 August when his son Gear Up put up a superb performance to land the G3 Acomb Stakes.
The Mark Johnston-trained colt broke smartly and was always prominent under Silvestre de Sousa. Gear Up made smooth headway once entering the final furlong and found more close to home to win by half a length from Spycatcher, with the pair three lengths clear of Broxi in third.
Gear Up is now unbeaten in two starts, having won over the same course and distance at the end of July.
Gear Up was bred by Jim Bolger and is out of Gearanai, making him a full brother to fellow Group winner Guaranteed. They are from the family of multiple G1 winner Dispute.
Gear Up becomes Teofilo's 11th juvenile Group winner at seven furlongs or above. Since his first crop ran back in 2011, only Galileo and Dubawi have sired more in Europe.
Just last weekend, Teofilo added an 18th G1 winner to his record when his daughter Donjah took the Preis von Europa in Cologne. He has a further two top-flight winners in 2020 in Hong Kong superstar Exultant and Prix Saint-Alary heroine Tawkeel.
