Microphone reproduced the form that made him Australia’s highest-rated 2YO of last season to win Saturday’s G2 Autumn Stakes at Caulfield, adding yet another Stakes success to the credit of his sire Exceed And Excel.
Having the second start of his latest campaign, the good looking son of Exceed And Excel raced in the style of a horse looking for longer than the 1,400m of his latest race, finishing resolutely to win by a long head from Banquo.
"It's good to see this colt return in great condition and show that desire to get up and win - it was a great drive to the line and he really motored late," said Microphone's trainer James Cummings.
The manner of his win encouraged his trainer to suggest the extra 200m of the G1 Australian Guineas or the G1 Randwick Guineas would be an attractive option.
But prior to those races, Cummings said he might also choose to run again at 1,400m in the G1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield on 22 February.
Microphone’s place at the top of last season’s 2YO crop was earned by four victories, the best of them in the G1 Sires Produce Stakes.
He is one of three G1-winning three-year-old colts from the 2016 crop with Exceedance and Bivouac.
Microphone, a son of the Stakes-winning Anabaa mare Sung is from a maternal family that also includes the G1-winners Yell and Holler.
Exceed And Excel, the sire of 165 Stakes winners, is currently standing the northern hemisphere season at a fee of €40,000 at Kildangan Stud in Ireland.
