A world record price for a yearling this year provided the highlight of some exceptional trade for progeny of the Darley stallions at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 this week.
The final bid of 2.1m gns for the daughter of Dubawi out of Loveisallyouneed, consigned by Newsells Park Stud, was made by John Magnier. The filly hails from the exceptional family of Jude, being out of a full-sister to the Classic-winning fillies Yesterday and Quarter Moon.
With a further five yearlings selling for over half a million guineas and a sale average of 662,273gns for 11 lots sold, it was little wonder that Dubawi ended the sale as leading sire by average (more than one lot sold).
His second-highest price was achieved by a half-sister to the multiple Stakes winner Dunelight from Corduff Stud, who was snapped up by China Horse Club for 900,000gns. His highest priced colt of the three-day sale was the first foal out of the G3 winner Alsindi, offered by Highclere Stud and purchased for 750,000gns by Blandford Bloodstock.
The highlight of the final day of selling was a filly by the late Street Cry who topped the day’s proceedings when selling for 800,000gns to Charlie Gordon-Watson. The filly, again offered by Newsells Park Stud, is a half-sister to the G1 Epsom Oaks runner-up Secret Gesture as well as the winner Sir Isaac Newton who was sold in the same ring for 3.6m gns two years ago.
Shamardal’s progeny were also much in demand, with a filly from the family of Foodbroker Fancy bought by US agent Shawn Dugan for 625,000gns.
Sepoy enjoyed a strong sale with 12 yearlings from his first European crop averaging 132,250gns, nearly nine times his stud fee. The highlight came on the third day of trade when a colt from the outstanding Hascombe & Valiant Stud family of Footstepsinthesand and Power was purchased by John and Jake Warren for 300,000gns. That price was the highest paid in Europe to date for progeny by Sepoy.
Once again, progeny of Casamento were much in demand, with all three of his catalogued yearlings selling for an average of 131,667gns – a staggering 26 times his stud fee. Helmet’s six yearlings sold averaged 10 times his stud fee at an average of 100,417gns, highlighted by a colt out of a half-sister to the smart sprinter Majestic Missile who was purchased by Shadwell for 250,000gns.
