Easy Classic success for Karpino
Karpino, a three-year-old son of Cape Cross, landed the G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen (German 2,000 Guineas) with consulate ease on Monday May 25, in the process remaining unbeaten through his three career starts. Always ridden with confidence by Oisin Murphy, he sat second most of the way before taking the lead two furlongs from home and running away to win by four-and-a-half lengths.
Bred by Stiftung Gestut Fahrhof, Karpino is a daughter of the Stakes-placed Sadler’s Wells mare Kahara, who is herself a daughter of the Classic performer Kithanga and a full-sister to St Leger hero Milan.
Karpino is one of 13 Stakes performers sired by Cape Cross so far in 2015, a figure that includes the impressive G2 Dante Stakes winner Golden Horn, likely to start favourite for the Derby at the start of June and the progressive Agent Murphy, who looks destined for better things after his easy Ascot Stakes victory. Cape Cross stands this season at a fee of €20,000 Oct 1st, SLF.
