Universal lands the G2 Princess Of Wales’s Stakes
Dubawi’s four-year-old son Universal recorded his third Group win of 2013 in fine style on the opening day of the July meeting at Newmarket, leading all the way to win the G2 Princess Of Wales’s Stakes.
Settled just off the rail under Joe Fanning, the Mark Johnston-trained colt travelled smoothly throughout the 12-furlong contest and was going best of all as the field quickened for home. He ran on superbly in the closing stages to win by two and a half lengths from Ahzeemah (also by Dubawi), with Cavalryman (Halling) finishing third to give the Darley stallions a 1-2-3 in the race.
This was Universal’s seventh career victory and fourth this year, with his previous Group wins coming in the G3 John Porter Stakes and the G2 Jockey Club Stakes – a race won last year by his paternal half brother and subsequent triple G1 winner Al Kazeem.
Bred by Grange Con Stud, Universal is out of the Giant’s Causeway mare Winesong, a half-sister to G1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Seazun.
Dubawi has sired no fewer than 14 individual Stakes winners this year, including four G1 winners headed by the aforementioned Al Kazeem.
