Cape Cross gets off to a flyer with his first juvenile runner of the year

Cape Cross, whose current crop of two-year-olds are those conceived after Sea The Stars’ outstanding year on the racecourse, opened his 2013 juvenile winner’s account in tremendous fashion on 24 March when Saburo recorded an easy victory at The Curragh.

Always handily-placed under Kevin Manning, Sheikh Mohammed’s homebred laid down his challenge once entering the final furlong and ran on superbly to win by two and a quarter lengths.

His trainer Jim Bolger was quick to draw comparisons with last year’s Champion juvenile and multiple G1 winner Dawn Approach (New Approach), saying after the race, ‘Hopefully he will go more or less the same route as Dawn Approach. I knew he probably had enough pace for five furlongs, but I can see him not being short of stamina. I like him and he is a good sort of horse.

‘I'd say he's versatile ground wise, and if you were a punter I'd tell you to follow him until he's beat.’

Bred by Darley, Saburo is out of the G2 winner Scatina, and is one of 59 current two-year-olds out of a Stakes winner by Cape Cross.
