Former champion Australian two-year-old Broadsiding returned to racing in spectacular fashion at Rosehill Gardens own Saturday, 22 February to give young Darley stallion Too Darn Hot the third leg of a Group race treble on the day.
The trio also came just two weeks after Rivellino won the RL Inglis 2YO Millennium over 1,100m at Randwick and Arabian Summer captured the G3 Peter le Grand Stakes at Caulfield.
Broadsiding saluted in the G2 Hobartville Stakes over 1,400m, just a few hours after Shanwah won the G2 Autumn Classic and Tropicus led all the way to snare the G3 Zedative Stakes at Caulfield.
A triple G1 winner, Broadsiding was well handled by Zac Lloyd to travel in third spot to the home turn before accelerating away to beat Swiftfalcon by one length, with Aeliana a half-neck away in third place.
He took his record to six wins and three placings from 12 starts for prize money earnings of $3,284,975 under Godolphin Australia head trainer James Cummings and is now on target for the G1 Randwick Guineas over 1,600m on 8 March.
Shanwah stamped himself as a young stayer on the rise when he won the Autumn Classic, beating Confetti Garden by 1.5 lengths with Imperialist a neck away on third place in a fast 1:49.79 seconds.
Bred by D. and J. Struthers and Trelawney Thoroughbreds Ltd from the Iffraaj mare Lady Sayyida, Shanwah was offered by Trelawney Stud Ltd at the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka sale and bought by Cameron Cooke Bloodstock for NZ$750,000.
Lady Sayyida is also the dam of 2022 G2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes winner Excelled (Exceed And Excel).
Trained at Cranbourne by Ciaron Maher and expertly ridden by Blake Shinn, the three-year-old now has three wins and one placing from sevens starts for prize-money totalling $257,175.
Tropicus also confirmed his potential when he won the Zedative Stakes, beating Lofty Arch by one-and-a-half lengths with Sergeant Major three-quarters of a length away in third spot in 1:09.69.
Trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman at Mornington and ridden by Mark Zahra, the win was his second, with two placings from seven starts, for prize money of $334,900.
Out of the Exceed And Excel mare Extensible, the three-year-old was bred and is raced by Kia Ora Stud.
Too Darn Hot, who only commenced stud duties in 2020, has already sired 140 winners of 223 races worldwide – including 23 Stakes winners of 36 Stakes races.
Champion First-Season Sire in Australia in 2023-24 with 12 winners of 18 races, Too Darn Hot has had 10 Stakes winners this season to be second on the overall Sires’ table for Stakes winners ahead of Zoustar, Written Tycoon and I Am Invincible.
