Sweet success

Apple Charlotte becomes the latest Black type winner for Royal Applause with victory in the Swettenham Stud Fillies' Trial Stakes; Parthenon (Dubai Destination) leads all the way to win Listed Glasgow Stakes

Apple Charlotte maintained her unbeaten record in fine style on 15 May, with a convincing victory in the Listed Swettenham Stud Fillies’ Stakes at Newbury.

The daughter of Royal Applause was settled in second under Tom Queally and took the lead with just over two furlongs left to run. Hard pressed by The Miniver Rose close to home, Apple Charlotte battled well to pull clear and win the ten-furlong contest by two and a quarter lengths.

Victorious on her two-year-old debut last November, the Henry Cecil-trained filly returned last month with a three-and-a-quarter length win over a mile at Ascot. She could return to the Berkshire course for her next appearance, as she holds an entry in the Coronation Stakes although her trainer indicated after the race that the G2 Ribblesdale Stakes could also be a possibility for his charge.

Apple Charlotte was bred by Hascombe and Valiant Studs and is out of the Stakes-winning Caerleon mare Maid Of Camelot. Already the dam of last year’s Ribblesdale Stakes second, Arthur’s Girl, she is from the family of Inchinor.

Also on Friday, Dubai Destination recorded a new Stakes winner when Parthenon led from start to finish to land the Listed Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton. Sent off the 5-2 second choice, he could not be caught by the favourite Stately Home and took the 11-furlong contest by two-and-a-half lengths. Stablemate Holberg (Halling) ran on well to take third place.

Parthenon becomes the fifth individual Black type winner for Dubai Destination, and his second this year. He is out of the Sadler's Wells mare Grecian Slipper, a half-sister to fellow Darley stallion Street Cry and now the producer of three Stakes winners.
