Golden Horn, the 2015 Horse of the Year, gained a first stakes victory as a sire when his two-year-old daughter West End Girl gamely took the G3 Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday, 10 August. A winner on debut and unlucky last time out when hampered late at Sandown, West End Girl made all and was challenged briefly a furlong out, but stayed on well to win smartly by just over a length for trainer Mark Johnston.
West End Girl was bred by Car Colston Hall Stud and is the second foal out of the winning Dansili mare Free Rein, a half-sister to G1 Prix Morny winner Reckless Abandon. This is the family of G1 winner and sire Crowded House and also multiple Group-winning sprinter Brando.
A winner of his only start at two, breaking the track record in the process, Golden Horn enjoyed a sensational three-year-old campaign taking the Derby, the Eclipse, the Irish Champion and the Arc.
