Rivellino and Arabian Summer in sizzling form

Colt and filly by Too Darn Hot win Black-Type events within hours in Sydney and Melbourne

Rivellino defied a wide barrier and a big field on just his second start to score a brilliant victory in the Restricted Listed Inglis Millennium for two-year-olds over 1,100m at Royal Randwick on Saturday, 8 February.

Ninety-five minutes later, Arabian Summer grabbed the lead in the shadows of the post to win the G3 Peter Le Grand Stakes 1,100m for three-year-old fillies at Caulfield.

Both the progeny of young Darley stallion Too Darn Hot (GB), Rivellino and Arabian Summer lifted their sire’s worldwide Stake-race tally since he commenced stud duties in 2020 to a remarkable 21 individual winners of 33 Black-Type events.

Rivellino remains unbeaten after he scored in a Randwick maiden on debut in early January.

Champion jockey James McDonald allowed Rivellino to settle near the tail of the field before taking the Kris Lees-trained two-year-old to the outside in the home straight.

Rivellino finished quickly to beat Within The Law and Artistic Venture to claim the massive $1,155,000 winner’s cheque and press his claims for a start in the G1 Golden Slipper at Rosehill next month.

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Arabian Summer (Harry Coffey) won her first Black-Type race by defeating Tobeornotobe and Shadhavar to boost her record to five wins and three placings from nine starts for prize-money and bonus earnings of $1,392,400.

Out of the Street Cry mare Maraam, the filly was bred by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum and offered by Coolmore Stud at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where McEvoy Mitchell Racing /Belmont Bloodstock Agency (FBAA) outlaid $220,000.

A three-time G1 winner on the track, Too Darn Hot is the sire of 2023-24 Australian 2YO of the Year Broadsiding.
