North America has been a superb flagbearer in Dubai for his sire Dubawi in recent years and on Thursday, 10 January, he opened his 2019 campaign perfectly when simply demolishing the field in the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R1.
Always prominent under jockey Richard Mullen, North America was still cruising approaching the final turn and once asked for his effort, moved clear with consummate ease and eventually crossed the line an astounding nine lengths ahead of his nearest rival.
North America finished third to Heavy Metal (Exceed And Excel) in this race last year, before beaten just a neck by subsequent Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow in R2. He then added a well-deserved first G1 victory to his record in R3 (pictured), winning the 10-furlong contest by no less than five and a quarter lengths.
North America was bred by Qatar Bloodstock and is a son of the G1-placed mare Northern Mischief, a half-sister to Champion US performer Gourmet Girl.
Dubawi, one of the world’s preeminent stallions, has sired 38 G1 winners to date and last year became the first UK-based stallion ever to sire 100 individual Group winners.
Dubawi stands at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket at a fee of £250,000, Oct 1, SLF. He stands alongside his G1-winning sons Night Of Thunder and Postponed (who both stand at £15,000, Oct 1, SLF).
