The winner of a conditions event at Meydan back in January, three-year-old Rebel’s Romance made a successful step up in class when taking the G2 UAE Derby at Meydan on Saturday, 27 March.
The son of Dubawi settled mid field in the nine-and-a-half furlong contest, making steady progress under jockey William Buick with three furlongs left to travel. Soon heading early leader Panadol, Rebel’s Romance was ridden out in the final furlong to win cosily by five-and-a-half lengths.
A Godolphin homebred, Rebel’s Romance is a half-brother to the Listed-placed Petticoat out of the Stakes-placed Street Cry mare Minidress, herself a half-sister to the G3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy winner Volcanic Sky. They are out of the G3 Musidora heroine and G1 Oaks-placed Short Skirt, a half-sister to Champion Older Mare Whitewater Affair, herself dam of Japanese Champion and sire Victoire Pisa.
Rebel’s Romance becomes the 199th Stakes winner for his outstanding sire Dubawi, who counts 44 individual G1 winners among these. This is the second Stakes winner of the day for Dubawi following Ironclad’s victory in the Listed Golden Mile at Bendigo. Dubawi counts a further six Black Type winners among his 2021 runners including the G2 duo of Military Law and D’Bai, both successful over a mile at Meydan.
