Cape Cross six-year-old Re Barolo put himself firmly in the picture for the G3 Winter Derby in March when coming from last to first to win the Listed Winter Derby Trial at Lingfield on 21 February. He was chased home by last-time-out Listed winner Suits Me (Bertolini) and Scintillo (Fantastic Light).
Though he bears an Irish suffix, Re Barolo’s connections are Italian through and through. The son of the Irish River mare Dalaiya, who is owned by Effezi SNC di Villa Felice, raced in Italy for his first three seasons, having been bred by Luciano Bosio. Now trained in Newmarket by Marco Botti, he has won a total of 13 races and has been Listed-placed on two occasions.
Cape Cross' 14 winners this year include his consecutive G2 Superlative Stakes winners Halicarnassus and Hatta Fort, now five and four resepctively, and both victorious at the Dubai International Racing Carnival in recent weeks.
