Three-year-old Slickly colt Meandre got the best of a tussle for the honours in the Listed Prix de l’Avre at Longchamp on Sunday, prevailing by a head, with first-crop Shirocco colt Ibienco another short-head behind in third.
Bred and owned by the Rothschild family, Meandre is a son of Penne, by Sevres Rose, and has enjoyed a profitable run in 2011 so far, finishing runner-up in two conditions races at Saint-Cloud before winning the Prix Comrade over 11 furlongs at Maisons-Laffitte on 27 April.
Sunday’s contest saw him step up by another furlong for his first foray into stakes company in which he again showed himself to be a colt with a bright future.
His trainer Andre Fabre enjoyed a successful day in Paris as he also sent out the Darley-bred winner of the G1 Prix Saint-Alary, Wavering, who is by Refuse To Bend out of Summertime Legacy (Darshaan).
Slickly, who stands at Haras du Logis in Normandy, is also the sire of Group winners Gris De Gris and Lixirova.
