Halling’s two-year-old daughter Havant was the highly impressive winner of the G3 Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket on only her second start, putting herself firmly in the picture for next season’s Classics. Khawlah, by Cape Cross, was third.
Owned by James and Anita Wigan, who bred the May-foaled filly in partnership with London Thoroughbred Services Ltd, Havant is out of Louella, a daughter of El Gran Senor, and is a half-sister to Leadership, winner of the G1 Gran Premio di Milano for Godolphin. She is now generally a 14/1 shot for the 1,000 Guineas next May, having also won her only other start on Newmarket’s July Course in August.
Havant joins G1 Prix Ganay winner Cutlass Bay, G2 Lonsdale Cup winner Opinion Poll, Eastern Aria and Holberg among Halling’s black-type winners in 2010. The last two named are both on course to contest the G1 Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday of November, the race in which Halling’s son Bauer went so close when beaten only a nose in 2008.
