A withering finishing burst has carried Dawn Passage to a narrow but superior win in Saturday’s Listed Rosebud Handicap at Rosehill over 1100m on Saturday, 10 August.
The son of Dawn Approach had only a couple behind him turning for home at the 400m, but once given full rein, he reeled in some handy three-year-olds, beating Let It Pour and Lucicello.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse gave Dawn Passage an unusually light juvenile season, the colt having only two starts for a win and a third.
But the strength of his Rosebud win suggests he will be in for a busier three-year-old preparation with the G1 Caulfield Guineas in October among his options.
The colt is out of the Devaraja mare Raja Lane, the dam of seven to race, all of them winners, including the Stakes winner Dinkum Diamond, the mother of the Stakes winner Graff.
Dawn Passage becomes the seventh Stakes winner for his sire.
