Manduro recorded his fifth individual G1 winner in tremendous fashion at Longchamp on 4 October, as his two-year-old son Ultra outbattled fellow Godolphin runner Cymric to take the Prix Jean Luc Lagardere.
Settled just off the pace under Mickael Barzalona, Ultra laid down his challenge as the field quickened for home, passing long-time leader First Selection at the top of the straight and staying on superbly to see off a late challenge from Cymric to win by a neck and extend his unbeaten run to three wins in three starts.
Next year’s Classics now beckon for this talented colt, trained by Andre Fabre - who of course also trained Manduro during an outstanding career that saw him crowned World Champion in 2007 after his victories in the G1 Princes Of Wales’s Stakes, the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois and the G1 Prix d’Ispahan.
Ultra is the best of seven winners out of the Nashwan mare Epitome, also dam of Group-winning filly Synopsis. She is from the family of Act One and Bosra Sham.
Manduro has enjoyed a tremendous Arc weekend so far, also siring yesterday’s G2 Prix Chaudenay victor Vazirabad. This year he has also sired G1 winner Braco Forte, plus recent G2 Beresford Stakes winner Ribbons (who won the G1 Prix Jean Romanet last year).
