Further G1 glory for Al Kazeem
Al Kazeem well and truly confirmed his position as one of Europe’s outstanding older horses, when on the second day of Ascot’s Royal meeting the son of Dubawi recorded back-to-back G1 victories when taking the 10f Prince Of Wales’s Stakes – a race won by his grandsire Dubai Millennium back in 2000.
Settled off the strong early pace set by Shamardal’s Mukhadram, Al Kazeem was always handily placed under jockey James Doyle. As the long-time leader looked to have stolen the race in the home straight, Al Kazeem battled superbly in the closing stages to take the day’s feature race by a neck.
The Roger Charlton-trained entire has now won six times and finished second four times in 11 starts, an impressive record considering a serious injury curtailed his 2012 season. This was his second victory at the highest level, with today’s win coming off the back of an impressive victory in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh last month. His trainer indicated after the race that a tilt at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe may now be on the cards, with a return to Ascot for the King George also likely to feature in his plans.
Bred by Mr and Mrs John Deer, Al Kazeem is out of the Darshaan mare Kazeem, a daughter of the Group-winning mare Kanz. Kazeem has been scanned in foal this season to Dubawi.
Dubawi has sired four individual G1 winners and four G1 performers so far this year, and a further nine Stakes winners. Al Kazeem is one of 12 Group winners from Dubawi's second crop - a number unmatched by any stallion in Europe.
