The sole Group race in Europe on Monday, the Prix d'Aumale, run over a mile at Chantilly, fell to a daughter of Cherokee Run, who was making just her third start.
Two-year-old Soneva, trained in France by Yves de Nicolay, prevailed after a game battle in the stretch with Article Rare, the pair passing the post clear of their pursuers by two-and-a-half lengths.
Purchased at Keeneland September last year for $170,000, Soneva is out of the Nureyev mare Lakabi and was bred by Mineola Farm, Dr Houchin and J W Hirshmann. She had finished runner-up on both her only previous starts at Deauville.
