Surrey Star, by Dalham Hall stallion Dubawi, became his sires 25th individual Stakes winner on Sunday April 10, when landing the Listed La Puente Stakes on the Santa Anita turf.
Stalking the pace in third from the outset, he never left the rail once, taking the lead round the home bend he held on tenaciously to score by half-a-length. Trained as a juvenile in the UK by Roger Teal, he was a winner at Epsom before being short-headed in the G3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes at Newmarket. Transferred to James Cassidy's barn, this was his first victory stateside after excellent showings in Graded contests at Hollywood Park and Santa Anita.
Bred by Anima Negra Gmbh & Co Kg, he is the first foal of German G3-winning Fantastic Light mare, Turning Light. She also has a two-year-old colt by fellow Darley stallion Manduro, who was his sires highest ever European priced foal when selling for 170,000Gns at Tattersalls.
Dubawi, who stands this season for £55,000, has made the best start of any stallion to a stud career since the inception of the Pattern, siring 11 Group winners from his European crops, including the exceptional G1 milers Makfi and Poet's Voice.
