First Australian Stakes winner for Shirocco
Ibicenco broke new ground for his sire Shirocco with his strong victory in the Listed Sandown Cup over two miles on the Sandown Hillside course in Australia.
The four-year-old colt not only became the seventh individual Stakes winner for Shirocco but earned the stallion his first Australian Stakes victory with his one-length triumph.
Ibicenco settled midfield early in the event before triple Melbourne Cup-winning rider Glen Boss ensured he had clear running to improve his position with six furlongs to run.
The Luca Cumani-trained entire’s superior staying ability prevailed over the final three furlongs as the Gestut Schlenderhan-bred strode to a convincing success.
Ibicenco is a half-brother to Irian, the 2009 Champion 3YO Male Miler in Germany, who won the G1 Mehl Mulhens Rennen as well as the G2 Jockey Club Cup in Hong Kong.
Shirocco stands at Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud at Newmarket where he will command a service fee of £7,000 in 2013.
