There was just one two-year-old by Exceed And Excel catalogued in yesterday’s Ascot Breeze Up Sale (running for the first time under Tattersalls Ireland) and the bay filly, offered by Church Farm Stables was undoubtedly the star of the show as she set a new sale record when attracting a final bid of £180,000.
Eventually bought by Tom Malone, she is out of the unraced Mujadil mare Masai Queen, already dam of a Group-winning juvenile in Chandlery, who landed the G2 Vintage Stakes in 2011. The mare is herself a half-sister to Stakes-winning and Group-placed Cape Cross colt Gwaihir. The filly will now join Eddie Lynam, with the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot cited as a possible target.
Exceed And Excel has already sired 14 Black type performers this year, including G1-winning sprinter Flamberge and Morawij, who finished third in last month’s G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen on Dubai World Cup night.
A Darley stallion was also responsible for the second highest-priced lot of the day at Ascot as a Lonhro colt out of a half-sister to multiple G1 winner Storm Song was knocked down to Dick O’Gorman for £170,000. He was offered for sale by Kilminfoyle House Stud, acting as agent.
