The feature race at Newmarket on Friday, 5 June was the G1 Coronation Cup and Dubawi’s outstanding son Ghaiyyath beat a high-class field in hugely impressive style to record his second win at the highest level, and in course record time.
Sent straight to the front under William Buick, Charlie Appleby’s charge dictated the pace throughout and was never remotely troubled, picking up superbly in the closing stages to win by two and a half lengths from last year’s Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck, with top-class stayer Stradivarius back in third.
Ghaiyyath’s previous start this year was a massive eight-and-a-half-length win over fellow Godolphin runner Spotify in the G3 Dubai Millennium Stakes at Meydan back in February.
Last year, he recorded an even more impressive win when landing the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden by an astounding 14 lengths.
Bred by Springbank Way Stud, Ghaiyyath is out of the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Nightime (Galileo), also dam of G1 Man O’War Stakes winner Zhukova.
He is one of 41 G1 winners for Dubawi, the only British-based stallion to sire 100 individual Group winners. Despite the interrupted racing season, Dubawi has sired 17 Black Type performers, seven of whom have won at Group level.
Dubawi stands at Dalham Hall Stud alongside his sons Postponed and Too Darn Hot.
