Darley stallions quinella G2 Tea Rose Stakes
Star Exceed And Excel filly Guelph, last season’s Champion two-year-old of New South Wales, made amends for a narrow defeat first-up with a dominant win in the G2 Tea Rose Stakes over 7f at Randwick, Australia, September 21.
A winner of the G1 Sires’ Produce Stakes and the G1 Champagne Stakes as a juvenile, Guelph is now a short-priced favourite to claim her third G1 victory in the Flight Stakes in two weeks time.
With regular rider Kerrin McEvoy out suspended, Hugh Bowman took the ride on Guelph in the Tea Rose Stakes. After settling second last early, Bowman made his move on the home turn and brought Guelph to the centre of the track. The big filly proved too strong for Dubawi filly Arabian Gold over the final 200m, going on to record a two-length win.
A homebred for Darley, Guelph is the second foal of Camarilla, who like her daughter was a winner of the G1 Sires’ Produce Stakes as a two-year-old. Camarilla was a daughter of G1 Queensland Derby winner Camarena who is a sister to Watchful, the dam of four-time G1 winner and Darley stallion Sepoy. Camarilla unfortunately died last Spring, however her colt foal by Street Cry survived and she also has a two-year-old colt by Shamardal called Ghibellines.
Exceed And Excel is the sire of 21 Stakes winners in 2013, with a career tally of 73, including six at the highest level. His best include triple G1 winner and Darley stallion Helmet, this year’s G1 Golden Slipper winner Overreach and Excelebration.
