Crystal glitters as Penny scoops sales pot

Four wins in a row as Cape Cross filly lands her second Stakes victory; Tobougg two-year-old wins valuable sales race

Crystal Capella made sure her victory in the Listed Princess Royal Stakes at Ascot was never in doubt, leading from the top of the straight and running on determinedly to hold off the challenge of runner-up Under The Rainbow (Fantastic Light).

With six runs under her belt, the Cape Cross three-year-old has only ever yielded to two horses, finishing runner-up on her sole start at two and then again on her resumption in May. Since then, she has assembled a clean line of 1s next to her name in the formbook – her last win prior to her Ascot victory being in the Listed Alice Keppel Stakes at Goodwood.

Running in the colours of Sir Evelyn de Rothschild and bred by his family’s Southcourt Stud, Crystal Capella is the first foal of the Stakes-winning Mark Of Esteem mare Crystal Star.

The preceding race on the card was the Watership Down Stud Sales Race, with a prize of more than £130,000 to the winner, which was Penny’s Gift.

The Tobougg filly has already won twice this season and was beaten just a nose by Infamous Angel (Exceed And Excel) on her last start in the G2 Lowther Stakes. She was bred by Captain Smith-Maxwell and is out of Happy Lady, who is by Cadeaux Genereux.
